The All-American Quinoa Burger

Here is your Quinoa Burger recipe.

1. Quinoa burgers are MOUTH-WATERING.

2. My husband is CRAZY for QUINOA burgers.

3. The best way to cook a quinoa burger is in a non-stick pan on the stovetop.

You know, you tell a group of people three things about yourself but one of the three things is actually not true. Then everyone has to guess which of your three things is the lie.

Didn’t you ever play this?

Well, I did. MANY a time.

Okay, I won’t really, but where’s the fun in peeking?

Before I jump into the RECIPE, I have to tell you that this will be my last post until after our Benjamin David… Baby # 3… arrives. HOPEFULLY that will be sometime in the next few days, but WHO KNOWS?! We are anxious to meet him! My due date is September 1st so it is just about here and, as of today, my doctor predicted this would be happening in the next 2-3 days. I can’t believe it’s already here!

I told you about my intense nesting instincts that kicked in again for this third child… possibly because it’s a boy this time instead of a girl. I’ve never had the chance to decorate or buy stuff for a little guy and it was a FUN change!

We’ll jump into the QUINOA BURGERS in just a moment, but here are pictures of our little guy’s room that’s ready and waiting for him to arrive…

Also, because I won’t be blogging too much for a bit, I posted some of my favorite recipes from Apples to Ziti thus far that are perfect for the Fall season that is around the corner! You’ll find some decadent, to-die-for Fall Recipes from some well known chefs and little ‘ol me, too. ENJOY!

To make the burgers, I started with the QUINOA.

(“KEEN-WAH”!!!)

Ahem. Sorry about that.

First, I rinsed the quinoa for a minute or so under cool water, pushing it around in a fine mesh sieve to be sure all the seeds get rinsed well. Add that to a medium saucepan…

To that, I added low-sodium beef broth, worcestershire, and salt/pepper to season…

I brought the quinoa to a boil, turned the heat to low and covered the pot, and then I let it simmer for 15 minutes.

Then I turned off the heat but left the pot covered. I let the pot sit for 10 more minutes and then fluffed the quinoa with a fork.

When the quinoa was completely cooled, I added it to 1 pound of ground beef in a large bowl…

Then I added a bit more salt to be sure the burgers would be well-seasoned.

Nothing worse than a flavorless burger.

Then I had my daughter add in the hot sauce…

I thought she’d do a better job of not going too crazy on the hot sauce. I just want to douse everything in the stuff right now.

I’m not to be trusted.

Then comes the messy part. Not actually my favorite thing to do, but I think it mixes everything together better than any other tool in my kitchen.

I squished everything together with my hands until it was mixed really well, and then formed the mixture into patties that weighed about 1/3 pound each and were about 3/4-inch thick.

They will be pretty wet and, I’ll admit, they don’t hold together as well as a regular beef burger would.

HOWEVER!!!… you are getting over two pounds of burgers with only 1 pound of ground beef. The quinoa really adds to the weight of the burgers and bulks them up… this makes them MUCH healthier for you!

I heated a large, non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Then I added in some canola oil and swirled the pan so it would coat it well.

Then… in go the BURGERS!!

Let’s get a little closer… see the quinoa in there…?? SUPER good for you! Full of protein!

After a few minutes on one side, I gave ’em a flip!

They cook in about 6-8 minutes total so you don’t have to wait long 🙂

You can really top the burgers with whatever seems most “American” to you.

During the last minute or so of cooking I added a slice of Colby-Jack cheese to each burger, but you can use whatever you have in your fridge that sounds most appetizing to you!

We added spinach leaves, grilled slices of onion, and sliced tomatoes to our burgers… along with mayo, mustard, and ketchup for condiments.

Feel free to change this up as you and your eaters prefer, of course!

You can keep it “American” or GO GREEK if you’re in the mood!

I must suggest that you use HEARTY buns for these burgers as they are on the moist side… which is actually nice because NOBODY likes a dried out burger, right?

WARNING: We had a few fall apart a bit because we weren’t careful enough with them. I would suggest moving them straight to their buns from the pan! The more moving you have to do, the more likely they are to lose their shape.

If your burger falls apart, please DO NOT write me hate messages. I promise the burger will taste just as good broken apart as it would in a patty.

Messier… but just as tasty.

Moist, savory, good-for-you, and CHEESY to boot!

And, in case you’re wondering…

1. Yes, quinoa burgers ARE mouthwatering… (at least in my opinion!!) You’ll feel like you can indulge in a big, juicy burger and you’ll be just as full… but the quinoa makes it a MUCH healthier meal!

2. NO, my husband is NOT crazy for quinoa burgers. There’s your lie, folks!

He actually REALLY loves quinoa. He even admitted that the flavor of the quinoa burgers was ‘very good’.

But, he still prefers that his burgers remain purely meat. Untouched by any non-beef products that might try to make their way in. You might say he’s a burger “purist”.

Black bean burger, Veggie Burger, Quinoa Burger… these are NOT up his alley.

But, he’s an adventurer when it comes to food and a sweet, loving husband who doesn’t want to make his 9-months-pregnant wife cry… so, he ate his quinoa burger anyhow. I love this man.

3. Quinoa burgers ARE indeed best cooked in a non-stick pan. We tried the grill and, well, they fall apart. (Tear) Luckily we didn’t start with all the burgers on the grill so we had plenty for cooking inside. I would DEFINITELY recommend a non-stick pan, too. They may be on the moist side but you would have to OVERcook them more than a typical burger to dry them out!
